Lady Karissa teaches her daughter, Lady Elizabeth Victoria Ann Beltane about the importance of equality for women.
“Lady Elizabeth, did you know that women had to fight for the right to vote throughout history, and women weren’t given the right to vote until later on.
“Throughout history, sons were considered more important than daughters because they could be sent to wars and continue what their father’s started.” Lady Karissa stated.
“In Europe very few kingdoms were daughters allowed to succeed their father’s to their thrones but in the Kingdom of Castile in Spain when King John II died his daughter Isabella became Queen of Castile.” Lady Karissa states.
“In the Kingdom of Navarre, Jeanne was allowed to succeed her father King Charles of Navarre.” Lady Karissa tells her daughter.
Later on Christina of Sweden succeeded her father to the throne of Sweden.” Lady Karissa explains, ``but so many Dukedoms and Earldoms were not given to the daughters and they were passed over if the man didn’t have a son to either his brother or nephew or male cousin.” Lady Karissa states.
Princess Margaret Plantagenet who was the daughter of Prince Thomas of Brotherton did become the 1st Duchess of Norfolk in her own right and only after Lady Anne de Mowbray who married Prince Richard, Duke of York, but she died.” Lady Karissa explains.
“When a woman married the title was passed onto her husband and a woman was not allowed to attend court and in her place her husband would have to go to court for her.” Lady Karissa explains.
“There have been many rich heiresses to the father’s Dukedoms throughout history and their father’s would marry to them for political reasons.” Lady Karissa explains.
Lord Thomas Howard 4th Howard Duke of Norfolk married the heiress to the Earldom of Arundel and she gave birth to only one son, before she died.” Lady Karissa explains.
“Some men would have no sons and only daughters such as Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Provence of France and he had three great daughters, Lady Margaret of Provence who married King Louis IX of France, his second daughter, Lady Eleanor married King Henry III of England, Lady Sanchia of Provence married Prince Richard of Cornwall and Lady Beatrice of Provence, Queen of the Sicily.” Lady Karissa explains.
I don’t think Lord Roman Bergenguer IV was not ashamed of his beautiful daughters as he became related to England, France and Italy.” Lady Karissa states.
“Three of his daughters became Queen in Europe and Lady Eleanor became Queen of King Henry III of England and the mother of King Edward I of England who was the father of King Edward II and Prince Thomas of Brotherton who was the father of Lady Margaret of Brotherton and she became the first Duchess of Norfolk in England.” Lady Karissa explains.
Lady Margaret daughter, Lady Elizabeth Seagrave married Lord John de Mowbray and their son, Lord Thomas de Mowbray married Elizabeth Fitzalan, Duchess of Norfolk and through them came Lady Margaret de Mowbray who married Lord Robert Howard who had Lord John Howard who became the 1sr Howard Duke of Norfolk and great-great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth the I of England.” Lady Karissa explains.
“King Henry VIII was persuaded to place both Princess Mary and Elizabeth back into the succession after their brother, Edward, by Katherine Parr, King Henry’s VIII ‘s sixth wife and Queen.” Lady Karissa tells Lady Elizabeth.
``There have been other notable women in history and ushered the dawn of a new age such as Empress Catherine I of Russia, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, Empress Catherine II of Russia and Empress Elizabeth of Russia along with Kosem Sultana.” Lady Karissa explains, “ We can’t forget Queen Victoria of England who was the grandmother of Europe.” Lady Karissa tells her daughter.
“These were all noble women of great character.’ Lady Karissa tells her.
“You will become the first Duchess of Norfolk Territory on Star Base 12 and I know you will pave the way for all daughters to succeed their fathers.” Lady Karissa tells her daughter as she holds her.
Lord Andrew Charles looks on as Lady Karissa bonds with their daughter, Lady Elizabeth and he walks “ I am not dead yet, Lady Karissa.”
“Oh too bad, Lord Andrew Charles Howard. Do you know that your own kin are planning your demise and downfall?” Lady Karissa asks.
“I have told them that Lady Elizabeth is too young to govern this damn territory.” Lady Karissa explains, “ If they wanted they would have asked me to become her regent.”
“Lady Elizabeth ‘s time will come.” Lady Karissa tells Lord Andrew Charles.
“I have Lady Elizabeth and our new baby to think of and you are my biggest baby at age 25 since your mother didn’t raise you right. I am left to raise you too.” Lady Karissa states.
Lady Karissa calls for Barbara and she asks, “Please come and take Lady Elizabeth. She needs her lunch and her nap.”
Barbara walks into the drawing room at Beltane Manor and she takes Lady Elizabeth and carries her back to the nursery.
